About Propolis
What is Propolis?
Propolis is a resinous substance collected by bees from leaf buds and exudates of trees and conifers. The bees modify the original resin composition to produce Propolis and use it as a sealing agent. It aids to keep the growth of microbes in the beehive under control. It is said, that the interior of a beehive is one of the most sterile environments in nature.
The properties of Propolis have shown extensive antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Because of these biological properties, Propolis has been shown to have outstanding value to mankind for its medicinal and health benefits.
What does Bee Propolis contain?
Over 200 individual components have been found as the constituents of Propolis. Close to half of the propolis composition are so called polyphenols: Phenolic acids (vanillic, salicylic, cinnamic, caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic), their esters, coumarins, and bioflavonoids (flavones, flavonols, flavanones, dihydroflavonols and isoflavones).
Aside from this high concentration of polyphenols, Propolis contains resins, balsams, waxes, fatty acids, essential oils, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. These are all natural and balanced by nature from the plants and the bees. Polyphenols are the most studied class of chemical compounds in Propolis.
Benefits of Propolis
The healing properties of Propolis have been used extensively by ancient civilizations as a powerful medicinal remedy for human kind. Propolis is used widely amongst Eastern and Western alternative medicines alike.Thousands of scientific papers have been published in the last decades. A review of the literature indicates the effectiveness of Propolis in many areas, such as:
- Strengthening the immune system.
- Stimulating white blood cells.
- May provide protection against virus infections of all sorts (flu, cold sores, herpes), colds, gum disease.
- Promoting healing of sores, wounds, acne, blemishes, eczema.
- Acting as a natural anti-inflammatory agent.
- Protecting against side effects of radiation.
- Helping the body to better absorb iron, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium.
